The ATPI Summer Workshop for Instructors Only has offered specialized instruction to more than 600 teachers for 17 years. This three-and-a-half day workshop allows teachers to choose from one of several tracks, providing opportunities for improving personal skills and classroom activities. Teachers from all curriculum areas (art, journalism, industrial technology, vocational education) make new friends and learn from each other in a relaxed, fun atmosphere.

The $225 (a $25 discount from 2009 to help offset the higher hotel cost) registration fee covers the workshop, all lunches, dinner on Wednesday and Friday evening and other fun items. Teachers that have attended the Summer Workshop in the past who bring one new person with them this year can register both individuals for $200 each. All workshop participants will receive a certificate for hours earned.

The workshop will be held at Texas A&M University in Commerce, TX. Supporters for the workshop include Olympus America (John Knaur), the Photo Imaging Education Association, Fort Worth Camera Store, Apple and Stan Godwin Photography. Other sponsors may be added.

Participants can stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Commerce, less than five minutes from the campus. The hotel has free wireless internet access to all of the rooms and a complimentary hot breakfast. ATPI has reserved a block of rooms at $89.99/night. The rate does not include 7% city tax. Make sure you bring your state sales tax exemption form in order not to pay the 6% state tax. Rooms must be reserved by July 1 with a credit card. Contact the Holiday Inn at 1-903-886-4777 to make reservations and tell them you are in the ATPI group. If you are willing to pre-pay for your room, with no cancellations allowed, the rate will be $85.99/night.

The Classes
Sports Photography
Are you tired of seeing underexposed, poorly composed, and blurred photos when your students shoot football and other sports? Is the light in your gym just too dim and there’s no bond election in your future? Do your students ask questions that you can’t answer when it comes to photographing action? This class can help you feel like a veteran coach rather than rookie when it comes to sports photography.
We’d encourage you to bring your own digital cameras and any lenses, especially longer ones, to work with so that the instructors can help you get the most out of your equipment, but we’ll have some you can work with too.
This class will be led by Steve Hamm, Arlington HS (Arlington).

Digital Video
From YouTube to Facebook, video is an important way to communicate with an audience. Today’s digital still cameras can now capture video sequences. And today’s newspaper photojournalists are just as likely to have a video camera in their bag rather than a still camera. Come learn techniques for working with this equipment as well as some of the software that can be used to edit the product.
Both Macintosh and Windows software will be taught in this class. Bring a laptop or computer with your software if you have one. Have a video camera with you as well. Leave with a movie project that would make a Spielberg jealous (or at least looking over his shoulder.)
This class will be led by Roger Hein, Sam Houston HS (Arlington), and Dusty Parrish, Allen HS (Allen).

Digital Processes
This class will feature mini-workshops during the week that offer computer and shooting techniques for digital photography. Topics will include working with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom, photographing with Lensbaby lenses and working with HDR (high dynamic range) images. Color management and digital asset management will also be included.
Participants will be shooting on site, so bring a digital SLR camera with you. All computers and software will be provided but feel free to bring a laptop if you would like to use your own.
This class will be led by Cape Cod retiree Stan Godwin and Mark Murray, ATPI Executive Director.

Visual Communication
Learning to tell stories through photographs is one of the most important skills a photographer needs. For this class you'll choose a story topic in the local community and will spend three days building your story package by combining images and sound to see storytelling in a whole new way.
This class will be led Olympus Visionary David Harp, Olympus Senior Marketing Manager for Digital SLR John Knaur and CEO of NCompassMedia Jake Palenske.
